Hi, I’m Sergio
I am a second-year Data Science and Engineering student at ULPGC, and I write SergioLearns to explain my degree the way I wish it had been explained to me.
Who I am
I was born in Gran Canaria to Colombian parents, and I grew up between two worlds that complement each other. I have always liked maths and computing.
I was about to study Telecommunications. What changed my mind was seeing the impact artificial intelligence was having in such a short time, and the uncertainty it created about the jobs of the future. I decided to bet on something that is present in AI and in everything else: data. That’s how I ended up studying Data Science and Engineering at ULPGC.
Why SergioLearns exists
In my first year there came a point when I felt I had to do more with my degree than go to class and take in the content. University can feel like a sea with no clear direction, and I missed having someone explain things the way a person who has just understood them would: with their doubts, their mistakes and the path to the solution. I couldn’t find it, so I started building it.
You won’t find an expert here. You’ll find someone who is learning alongside you, who makes mistakes, who searches for why their code doesn’t work at two in the morning and who, once they finally get it, writes it down so you don’t have to go through the same thing. Behind every article there are sleepless nights before exams, solved past papers and last-minute reviews fuelled by caffeine.
It’s the project I’m proudest of, because it solves a real problem: the one I had, and the one many students who are now where I was a year ago probably have.
How I explain
- Like someone who has just understood it. Assuming nothing, doubts and mistakes included.
- In three steps. Every topic has its theory, solved programs and exercises to practise on your own.
- With complete programs. Code you can copy and run, not loose snippets without context.
- In two languages. Every article is in Spanish and English, so it reaches more people.

Where it’s heading
SergioLearns grows with me. I’m now in my second year, so the courses I’m taking will gradually arrive: statistics, data analysis and visualisation, maths and, later on, machine learning and projects with real data. The common thread is always the same: I learn, I understand it and I write it down.
When I finish my degree I still don’t know whether I’ll do a master’s, sit public service exams or go straight into a job. I’ll figure it out as I go, and what I do know is that I’ll share it here.
Outside the code
When I’m not studying, I’m working out or playing video games. I also have a YouTube channel, Siéntate y hablemos, where I share personal reflections that don’t fit in a technical article (in Spanish).
